Diabetes Education Resources: Exercise

Physical Activity and Diabetes

Exercise enhances insulin sensitivity in people with diabetes.

  • It also helps to lower blood sugar
  • and reduce the risk of heart disease and nerve damage,
  • in addition to controlling blood pressure,
  • lowering LDL cholesterol,
  • and aiding in better sleep and mood.

The American Diabetes Association recommends 150 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous intensity aerobic activity per week, spread out over at least 3 days per week, with no more than 2 consecutive days without activity for most adults with type 1 or 2 diabetes.
